Puppy Hit By RTD Light Rail Train In Recovery After Having Leg Amputated (PHOTOS)

Puppy Hit By RTD Train Recovering

A puppy is lucky to have escaped with her life after colliding with an RTD light rail train last weekend.

Jessie, a 6-month-old border collie mix is now recovering from surgery after being found with her hind left leg nearly severed upon impact. Amazingly, veterinarians say that the light rail train’s speed likely cauterized her wound and stopped her bleeding, ultimately saving her life.

"Three-legged dogs do really well," Brian Van Vechten, a veterinary surgeon with Veterinary Referral Center of Colorado (VRCC) told media Tuesday. "She's young, she'll adapt quickly to this and she'll still be faster than any of us on three legs."

According to the VRCC's Facebook page, the light rail train called Denver Animal Control to report they had hit a dog on Saturday.

Jessie had gone missing from home for a few days, but she and her owner have since been reunited.
