WASHINGTON -- District of Columbia residents are now one step closer to legal prescriptions of medical marijuana.
On Tuesday, the Department of Health released patient application forms (available here) that are "the final step patients need to complete in order to receive their medical marijuana cards," according to medical marijuana dispensary Capital City Care.
Medical marijuana advocates originally estimated dispensaries would open by late 2012; earlier this month, one dispensary simply said it would open "after Memorial Day weekend."

These two medical marijuana dispensaries have been approved by the city and are ready to open. Three cultivation centers are also raring to go. But the opening for each has continually been pushed back.
The hitch? The D.C. Department of Health didn't give doctors the authority to recommend medical marijuana to patients until recently, according to a department spokeswoman.
As of June 6, The Washington Times said "18 doctors had received applications to allow them to recommend medical marijuana to qualified patients."
Applicants for a medical marijuana card are required to provide two passport-type photographs, a photocopy of a government-issued photo ID, a physician recommendation form, proof of D.C. residency and a $100 application fee.
A representative who answered the phone at the D.C. Department of Health couldn't give a timeframe between applying for a medical marijuana card and receiving the card.
