Monday's episode of the "The Bachelorette" proves Desiree Hartstock needs more than a pretty face. Though she (and you, come on) loved every minute of "The Mr. America" pageant, Des clearly wants a man who not only looks good but also does good.
The season nine bachelorette and her date, James Case, toured the devastation of the Jersey Shore and visited Manny and Jan, a couple whose home was destroyed by Hurricane Sandy. After learning about how the two celebrated their 38th anniversary in a Red Cross shelter, Hartstock and Case offered them their date -- which included a limo ride, an extravagant dinner in Atlantic City, and a private performance by country singer Darius Rucker.
"It's nice to step outside of the glamour that comes with being the Bachelorette and really just raise awareness and give back," Hartstock said.
In a letter on the show's website, the show's leading lady urged her fans to sympathize with and also support the victims of these types of natural disasters.
"The Atlantic coastline still needs support, as do our friends in Oklahoma who have recently experienced the devastation that natural disasters can cause," she wrote. "I hope that all of you can join me in taking the time to give back, whether it is volunteering locally, or contributing to The Red Cross disaster relief fund right here."
Hartstock and Case also accompanied a Red Cross representative on a helicopter tour of Seaside Heights, where they witnessed the devastation of the hurricane's aftermath. Sandy was the deadliest hurricane to occur in the northeast in 40 years, the AP reported. It took the lives of 72 Americans and caused $50 billion worth of damage.
