Pixies' 'Bagboy' Video Marks First Song In 9 Years, Comes After Kim Deal's Departure

Posted: Updated:

The Pixies may have just lost bassist Kim Deal, but that hasn't deterred them from releasing new music. "Bagboy," the band's first new song in nine years, hit the web on Friday morning in the form of an all-new video.

"Bagboy" is a fine track, with an imposing riff and enchanting drums that play fantastically off of Black Francis' half-sung, half-spoken vocals.

"The lyrics, coincidentally, were composed at a Starbucks Coffee in Harvard Square in Cambridge, about a hundred feet from where, 25 years ago, I composed some of the lyrics to an old Pixies song called 'Break My Body,'" vocalist Francis told Rolling Stone. "The music for the song has been around for a few years. There are some demos I made with Joey and David a few years ago in Los Angeles, related to a film idea that still has yet to see the light of day, although work on the music continued."

In the video, a young man goes on a grocery run before destroying much of a house and taking a bath in cereal (good morning!). Deal's departure was announced just two weeks ago, after the bassist's 25-year, on-again off-again involvement with the band. Rolling Stone notes that it's unclear who plays bass on "Bagboy," but that shades Deal-esque backing vocals are persistent throughout the track.

A new Pixies album has long been rumored, but there is no currently official information to that end. Take a listen and watch the video above -- let us know what you think in the comments.
