We're not saying that this trends is something completely new. Way back when, Diane Keaton named her daughter Dexter Dean and Kelsey Grammer had girls called Spencer and Mason and Miley Cyrus’s parents named their second daughter Noah. But lately more and more celebs have been giving their daughters completely male -- not unisex -- names. The most recent example is, of course, North West. Here are 11 of the most extreme gender-benders. Take a look and let us know what you think of them in the comments! (And be sure to check out Nameberry's great new infographic showing just where every unisex name stands on the boy-girl spectrum.)
A surprising presidential choice by Kristen Bell and Dax Shepard for their baby girl. With Steven Spielberg’s Oscar-nominated movie last year, the name Lincoln was very much in the air, and certainly in the past there have been other presidential surnames used for girls -- Madison, Taylor -- but still...
Wait, wait -- here’s another presidential surname long used for boys that joined the girl group. Mariah Carey and Nick Cannon named their twin daughter in honor of Marilyn Monroe, but apparently found Marilyn too dated and mundane -- and, it seems, feminine.
Scorning Maxine, the traditional female route to the nickname Max, Jessica Simpson chose to call her daughter Maxwell Drew. But she wasn’t the first: just a few months earlier, actress Lindsay Sloane gave birth to her own pink Maxwell.
After getting so much flak for naming your son Pilot Inspektor -- even if you offered some reasonable reference to some Grandaddy song -- you would think you’d pick a nice, simple girly name like Charlotte or Claire for your daughter. But then you wouldn’t be Jason Lee. Casper Lee may be one of the only girls bearing that name.
Weston and Easton are both traditional boys’ names, but Easton seems to be starting to tip over into the pink column after being chosen by Elizabeth Rohm. Boys’ names starting with E seem to be particularly susceptible to gender-bending, as in Emerson, Emery and El(l)iot(t).
It came as a surprise when this currently hot boys’ name was given to his daughter by Jackass star Johnny Knoxville. And yet we could definitely envision Arlo becoming bff with girls named Harlow and Marlowe.
We’ve heard women called foxy, but this is the first girl we’ve heard of to actually be named Fox. Fox India was the choice of Take That musician Mark Owen for his baby girl. There’s already been Erykah Badu’s daughter Puma -- we can only wonder what will be next from the wild animal menagerie.
Judah is not only the biblical son of Jacob, but also the daughter of musician Ziggy (born David Nesta) Marley -- and the only one of his six children not to have a gender-specific name. Similarly, Alexis Stewart made her mom Martha the grandma to a little girl named Jude.
Sometimes celebs attempt to neutralize their extreme gender-bending by following their first name choice with a girlier middle, as in the case of Michelle Branch’s daughter Owen Isabelle. Brendan Fehr did the same with daughter James Olivia.
Exotically named one-time child star Soleil Moon Fry went double-barrel when she named her daughter Jagger Joseph. Her other girl is the much more conventionally feminine Poet Sienna Rose.
We’ve seen girl babies named Hunter, Harley and Hartley, but this is the first Hudson we’ve noticed being poached from the boys’ list. It was the choice of Broadway musical star James Barbour for his daughter.
Here’s an example of gender-bending going the other way. Peaches Honeyblossom Geldof, no stranger to strange names, with sisters called Fifi Trixiebelle, Little Pixie and Heavenly Hiraani Tigerlily, chose to give both her sons customarily female names -- Astala and Phaedra.
