Al Jazeera America To Launch August 20

Al Jazeera America is scheduled to launch on Tuesday, August 20, Ali Velshi revealed on Wednesday.

The new network has been busy hiring staff and finalizing its programming ahead of the debut. It recently signed a production deal with Soledad O'Brien to serve as a special correspondent and produce documentaries for the network, and also signed Ali Velshi as a primetime host.

Those deals came after reports that the network was looking for high-profile talent to boost recognition. But there are still a number of major decisions left to be announced, as Al Jazeera America gets close to crunch time. The network has yet to name a chief, though it has reportedly been closing in on someone.

The scheduled launch will take place eight months after Al Jazeera bought Current TV in January and announced its plans to launch its own network in place of the channel.
