Childhood nightmares, beware -- Chucky is back. Yes, the maniacal redheaded doll is unleashing his terror once more in "Curse of Chucky," the sixth entry in the famous "Child's Play" series. Except this time, Chucky's rampage is headed straight to DVD and Blu-ray.
The last time we glimpsed the little monster came in 2004, when "Seed of Chucky" failed to muster up even $25 million at the box office worldwide. It's no wonder, then, that the newest edition is skipping the theatrical release; "Seed" saw a 50 percent decline in ticket sales from 1998's "Bride of Chucky."
Despite its DVD debut, "Curse of Chucky" offers an entry that's more closely aligned with the original three "Child's Play" submissions, all of which were straightforward horror films. The two most recent additions to the series skewed heavily toward horror-comedy hybrid, even containing spoof elements.
Thankfully, "Child's Play" purists will at least be graced once again with the voice of Brad Dourif, who has portrayed Chucky since the 1988 original. His daughter, Fiona Dourif, takes the lead in "Curse of Chucky" as the mother of a young girl who receives the doll in the mail unexpectedly. Dan Mancini, who has penned all of the previous entires, returns for "Curse" as well. Unfortunately, Jennifer Tilly is nowhere to be seen.
"Curse of Chucky" will be released Sept. 24. Check out the trailer above.
