Maurkice Pouncey, NFL Player, Apologizes For 'Free Hernandez' Hat

NFL Player Is Sorry About Aaron Hernandez Hat

NFL twins Maurkice Pouncey and Mike Pouncey were lambasted by fans over the weekend after they were spotted wearing hats in support of their former teammate Aaron Hernandez.

Maurkice Pouncey, a center for the Pittsburgh Steelers, has since apologized, taking to Twitter Monday morning to express his regret.

"I fully recognize the seriousness of the situation involving my former teammate, and I regret that my actions appear to make light of that serious situation," he wrote.

According to ESPN, the Pouncey brothers are believed to have been celebrating their birthdays at a night club Saturday when they were photographed wearing hats emblazoned with the words "Free Hernandez." Mike Pouncey, who plays with the Miami Dolphins, and Maurkice Pouncey had both played with Hernandez at the University of Florida.

"The public backlash to the Pouncey brothers wearing those hats might be one reason so few of Hernandez's former teammates and coaches have said anything publicly about his situation," commented Yahoo! Sports' Frank Schwab of the hat controversy.
