Granita Recipes: Icy, Frozen Desserts To Cool Down In The Summer Heat (PHOTOS)

Ooh la la, it's hot outside. Let's make the coldest desserts we can.

"You know when you open the oven to check on something that's roasting in there, and you get a blast of hot air in your face? It's like that, but all the time." That's how we described the weather this week. We are in need of a frozen summer dessert ASAP. We have tons of homemade ice cream recipes, not to mention all the delicious sorbet recipes we've fallen in love with this summer. For those without an ice cream maker, but still in need of a delicious, homemade frozen dessert idea, may we present: granita recipes.

Granitas are the amazing lovechild of sorbet and popsicles, somewhere in the middle texture-wise, their equal in powers of refreshment. Aside from being delicious and cooling, these icy desserts also have the benefit of being crazy easy. Once you've decided on a flavor and sweetened it appropriately, you pour your granita base into a wide, shallow pan and put it in the freezer. Stir every once in a while as it freezes to break up the ice crystals, then once it's fully frozen, drag a fork across the surface to "fluff" the ice. Then you have a frosty dessert, and elegant palate cleanser or a tasty way to cool down during the dog days of summer. Check out the amazing recipes below, and let us know which ones you like best.
