Harry Reid: Mitch McConnell 'Tried To Make Love To The Tea Party And They Didn't Like It' (VIDEO)

Posted: Updated:

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) took a jab at Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) on Monday, appearing to be entertained by the possibility that McConnell may face a tea party favorite in 2014.

"He tried to make love to the tea party and they didn't like it," Reid said of McConnell at an Organizing for Action event, Politico reported.

Matthew Bevin, a Kentucky Tea Party businessman who has been regarded as an emerging opponent for several months, is expected to enter the 2014 U.S. Senate race against McConnell on Wednesday at the state Capitol.

McConnell's campaign manager, Jesse Benton, has said that Bevin's challenge would be "nothing more than a nuisance," according to a Monday Associated Press report. Benton added that the senator will focus on "working hard for Kentucky every day" rather than preparing for a run against Bevin and Democratic opponent Alison Lundergan Grimes.

But University of Louisville political scientist Laurie Rhodebeck disagrees, telling the AP that McConnell is "going to have to spend money and time on the primary, and it's clear he'd much rather be attacking Grimes right now."
