While it's not their usual target, the crew of the Wizard couldn't resist when they spotted a dead walrus floating in the Bering Sea on this week's "Deadliest Catch." Captain Keith called it the "trophy" of the seas. Walrus tusks can be worth thousdands of dollars, making this a worthy diversion for the crew.
Unfortunately, they were having difficulties getting the walrus body hooked from the boat, so deckhand Freddy decided to do something crazy. He decided he was just going to jump into the freezing waters and fetch it.
Figuring out what was about to happen, Captain Keith shouted, “No, no, no, no, no! Somebody go get a survival suit! Holy sh*t! What are you doing?”
But it was too late. "Freddy just disrobed and jumped in the f*cking water on me," lamented Captain Keith. "I don’t know what he’s f*cking thinking.”
With the water at 35 degrees, exposure of more than 60 seconds can lead to hypothermia -- possibly bad enough to kill someone. Diane Zoller-Ciatto, a writer for the Examiner, called Freddy "one tough dude." Zap2It's Kate O'Hare agreed, saying that he definitely liked to live on the edge.
His antics, though, left Captain Keith with two things that needed to be fetched from the water. He had his crew quickly pull Freddy out first, and then they snagged the walrus. They were able to retrieve the valuable ivory, which could be worth as much as $5,000 per tusk.
