On August 1, 1936, a man who would set the standard for sophisticated women's fashion was born. Yves Saint Laurent is perhaps best known for making menswear-inspired clothing that still exuded a strong femininity. His infamous "le smoking" tuxedo suits, jackets and trousers altered our perceptions of what makes a woman a woman. Even today, strong-willed stars like Jessica Chastain and Courtney Love have been featured in Yves Saint Laurent ad campaigns.
Saint Laurent also cared a great deal about his own style. In this photo from 1972, the designer has some fun with the basic tuxedo by adding a polka-dotted bow tie that adds a pop of whimsy to the whole ensemble. We adore this look -- all fashionable men today, take note.
Saint Laurent died in 2008 from brain cancer, but he would have been 77 today. Take a look back at the legendary designer.
