Where: 2424 Jones Street/43 Houston Street, Russian HillWhat: An exceptional house designed by Bay Area architect William Wurster in 1961, at a point in his career where he eased away from designing private residences and moved on to grander projects like Ghirardelli Square. With soaring redwood spaces and simple but exquisite details, the 4-bed, 3-bath, 5-level house recalls Wurster's austere (and radical) Modernist houses of the 30s. The double-height living room, below, with a sliding wall that opens to a luxurious guest suite:
