A Florida mother of two was arrested after police found her children in deplorable conditions.
According to ABC affiliate WPBF, police were tipped off by a girl who called saying that she hadn't eaten in three days.
When officers arrived at the residence of Tammy Pierce on July 31, they found the 26-year-old woman lying on the floor smelling strongly of alcohol.
Her children, who were dressed only in shorts, complained that they were hungry and appeared to be covered in insect bites.
Pierce, who works as a dancer and bartender at an area gentleman's club, told deputies that she'd had too much to drink the night before. But that didn't explain the deplorable conditions in the house, where the electricity had apparently been shut off. Rotten food and flies were found in the refrigerator, and deputies described the home as dirty and littered with cigarette butts, according to NBC affiliate WPTV.
WPBF reported that a Palm Beach County firefighter who responded to the scene went out and bought food for the hungry kids. They were placed in the care of their godmother.
Horrifying allegations of neglect have been surfacing over the past month.
In June, a Virginia mother was arrested on child abuse charges after police searching her property on an arrest warrant for a different suspect found her two children locked in a filthy trailer with no air conditioning.
Later that month, two Georgia sisters were arrested after dozens of dying cats were found in a hotel room they had shared. A disabled man who turned out to be the son of one of the sisters was found restrained in a wheelchair in the dirty room.
