David Dewhurst, Texas Lieutenant Governor, Launches Reelection Bid

Perry's Right-Hand Man Launches Reelection Bid

While Texas Gov. Rick Perry (R) is not running for reelection, his No. 2 is officially in.

Texas Lieutenant Gov. David Dewhurst (R) officially launched his campaign for reelection on Wednesday. In a statement released on his website, Dewhurst highlighted his belief that Texas "can get even bigger and better."

"As great as Texas has become, I feel like we’re just getting started," Dewhurst said.

Dewhurst attempted to replace retired Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison (R-Texas), campaigning hard for the 2012 GOP nomination. But in July 2012, he lost in convincing fashion to Tea Party favorite and eventual Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas).

The Texas Tribune notes that Dewhurst will have a new campaign team, headed by manager Ryan Hecker. Hecker once worked for FreedomWorks for America, an organization that endorsed Cruz in June 2011.
