The fight against Florida's "Stand Your Ground" laws isn't ending any time soon. Especially not if rapper Talib Kweli and the Dream Defenders have anything to say about it.
The Dream Defenders, a group of Florida-based activists who fight for social change through civil disobedience, have been camped out in the Tallahassee offices of Florida Governor Rick Scott for the last four weeks, urging him to convene a special session of the legislature to enact "Trayvon's Law." The law aims to repeal "Stand Your Ground," ban racial profiling, and end the school to prison pipeline, according to the Defenders' website.
Since the start of their protest, the activits been joined by civil rights legend, Rev. Jesse Jackson. Last week singer, actor and activist Harry Belafonte joined the movement; and today, rapper Talib Kweli has also expressed his intentions to support.
The Dream Defenders have remained vigilant in their protest and with the support of notables like Jackson and Belafonte, the group won a small victory last Friday as Florida House Speaker Will Weatherford announced that he will be ordering a review of the controversial laws this coming fall.
Still, repealing them will be an uphill battle. The committee overseeing the review of the laws will be headed up by Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fort Walton Beach) who told the Tampa Bay Times, "I don't support changing one damn comma of the 'Stand Your Ground' law."
