August 9 marks what would have been the 50th birthday of Whitney Houston.

The iconic artist was born 50 years ago today in Newark, New Jersey, later becoming one of our most celebrated singers. Houston released six studio albums and one holiday album, earning the singer six Grammy awards for her work before her death at the age of 48 in 2012.
