Juan Agudelo Goal: Revolution Striker Scores Backheel, Rainbow Goal In Injury Return (VIDEO)

Not even Juan Agudelo could explain precisely what went through his mind as he scored what may be the most audacious goal of the 2013 MLS season.

In his first game back after an injury layoff on Saturday, the New England Revolution striker ran into the Chicago Fire penalty area in pursuit of a through ball from teammate Chris Tierney in the 54th minute. With Agudelo bearing down on him and the ball seemingly within his reach, Fire goalkeeper Sean Johnson charged off his line. To the apparent surprise of Johnson and amazement of the fans at Gillette Stadium, Agudelo deftly flicked the ball over the keeper with the outside of his right foot. The ball arced over the outstretched arms of the keeper and into the gaping mouth of the goal. Although Fire defender Bakary Soumare made a valiant effort to clear the ball off the line, officials ruled that Agudelo had scored. Everyone watching ruled that it was awesome.

“I just thought the ball slowed down a little bit,” Agudelo told MLSsoccer.com after the Revs' 2-0 win. “It was just instinct. Maybe it was a little South American swag, I don't know. I'm just happy it went in.”

Whether or not the 20-year-old's goal was the product of "a little South American swag" or not it was undeniably spectacular. Fans of Stoke City are hoping that Agudelo, who moved to the U.S. from Colombia at age 8 and has already earned 17 caps with the U.S. national team, will be able to bring this creativity to the Premier League. Agudelo has signed a pre-contract with Stoke and will join them on Jan. 1 after his contract with the Revolution runs out.
