GOP Congressman To Constituents: It Would Be 'Dream Come True' To Write Bill To Impeach Obama

Rep. Kerry Bentivolio (R-Mich.) became the latest House Republican to suggest that he'd like to impeach President Barack Obama, telling a disappointed constituent on Monday that he would file such a bill if he could find the "evidence" to make it stick.

"You know, if I could write that bill and submit it, it would be a dream come true," he said in response to a question at a town hall meeting reported on by BuzzFeed. "I feel your pain, I know, I stood twelve feet away from the guy and listened to him. I couldn't stand being there, but because he is president I have to respect the office. That's my job, as a congressman, I respect the office."

Bentivolio said that he'd followed up with lawyers to find out how he could pursue an effort to impeach the president. He told his constituents he would need hard evidence to do so.

"Until we have evidence, you're going to become a laughing stock if you've submitted the bill to impeach the president because number one you've got to convince the press," the congressman said. "And there are some people out there no matter what Obama does he is still the greatest president they have ever had. That's what you’re fighting."

Impeachment has been a popular demand at GOP town halls around the country during the congressional recess. Earlier this month, Rep. Blake Farenthold (R-Texas) told a questioner he believed that a bill to bring articles of impeachment against Obama -- for an unstated reason -- would get the required number of votes among House Republicans. That said, Farenthold admitted that such a move wouldn't make it past the Democratic-controlled Senate.
