A high school football team reportedly committed to Jesus over the weekend at New Birth Missionary Baptist Church in Lithonia, Ga. The event took place days after the death of a player from a nearby school, although it is unclear if the two incidents are related.

On Sunday, players from Towers High School's Titans football team were called to the church's alter, where they “received salvation,” according to a description of YouTube video documenting the event.

The New Birth Missionary Baptist Church, as led by Bishop Eddie Long, also posted a photo of the occurrence on Facebook:

“It was awesome to c the football player n the others ones give their lives to Christ Powerful,” one commenter wrote of the event.

The gathering came two days after the death of local football player De’Antre Turman. The 16-year-old was a top prospect for the class of 2015 and died after breaking his neck and third cervical vertebra during a scrimmage.

New Birth Missionary Baptist Church has more than 25,000 members, according to its website. In recent years, Bishop Long has been the subject of several controversies, including lawsuits accusing him of sexual misconduct.

Neither Towers High School nor New Birth Missionary Baptist Church responded to requests for comment from The Huffington Post.
