Reports about a possibility military strike against Syria intensified Tuesday as a growing number of countries called for action in the wake of last week's chemical weapons attack.

White House Press Secretary Jay Carney said Tuesday the Obama administration believes the regime of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad was behind a poison-gas attack near Damascus on Aug. 21. Carney said the use of chemical weapons constitutes an escalation of the conflict that cannot be tolerated, and that the White House is reviewing options for response. According to NBC News, the U.S. could launch a military strike as early as Thursday.
