An elementary school on Chicago's South Side was put on lockdown Thursday afternoon around dismissal time after a woman was shot nearby.
The 18-year-old was shot around 2:30 p.m. outside Wacker Elementary School in the 9700 block of South Morgan Street in the Longwood Manor neighborhood.. The Tribune reports five men were detained after the shooting and police say the incident stemmed from a gang conflict.
The woman, who police described as "uncooperative," was taken to an area hospital in stable condition. There were no reported injuries at the school.
Earlier Thursday, a man, 22, was shot in the buttocks and leg a block from Bass Elementary School in Englewood while students ate lunch. According to CBS Chicago, the victim ran through the playground at one point.
The shooting happened just before U.S. Sen. Mark Kirk and Congressman Bobby Rush started a tour of the neighborhood to assess the crime and economic disinvestment that has plagued the area.
Rush told CBS shootings are life in Englewood.
“It’s not a shock. This happens whether or not I’m in the neighborhood, whether or not Sen. Kirk is in the neighborhood,” he says.
The shooting victim was taken to an area hospital in stable condition and no school staff or children were injured. Neither of Thursday's shootings were along Safe Passage routes.
