Thomas Pynchon's latest novel, "Bleeding Edge," comes out in fewer than two weeks. (13 days, to be exact, but who's counting?) As if we weren't amped enough, Penguin has released a peculiar trailer that may or may not offer a glimpse into Pynchon's most recently crafted world.
An actor curiously donning a shirt that reads, "Hi, I'm Tom Pynchon" romps around the Upper West Side, stopping into grocery stores to make tedious demands. He describes himself as, "an all-seeing eye, a power player from the margins, kind of like Karl Rove, if Karl Rove were liberal and Jewish." The book itself is hardly referenced directly, until the actor references one of its characters, Maxine Tarnow ("a grade A MILF").
Maxine, the novel's protagonist, chases down con artists as part of her, er, privately run fraud investigation business - that is, when she isn't busy raising her two sons or rekindling her on-again-off-again marriage. It's the dawn of the Internet era, and she runs into trouble when investigating the billionaire CEO of a computer security firm.
"Will perpetrators be revealed, forget about brought to justice? Will Maxine have to take the handgun out of her purse? Will she and Horst get back together? Will Jerry Seinfeld make an unscheduled guest appearance? Will accounts secular and karmic be brought into balance? Hey. Who wants to know?"
We certainly do!
