A spokesperson for the Lhota campaign confirmed the \"machines were broken\" at his polling place.

Democratic candidate Anthony Weiner also had issues when he showed up to vote. Buzzfeed's Ruby Cramer reported there was a \"snafu\" that delayed Weiner because his name was in the voter rolls \"but his signature was missing.\" The Weiner campaign did not immediately respond to a request to confirm this report.

From New York's Dan Amira:

There's a famous theory in polling known as the Bradley Effect. Named after Thomas Bradley, the former mayor of Los Angeles, it suggests that in a race between a white candidate and a black candidate, some voters will tell pollsters that they intend to vote for the black candidate, when in reality, they'll actually vote for the white candidate. The idea is that, even in an anonymous poll, people want to give the answer that they think they're supposed to give — in this example, the racially progressive answer.

As New Yorkers head to their old-timey voting booths today, the comptroller race between Scott Stringer or Eliot Spitzer is essentially a dead heat. Quinnipiac has Stringer up seven points, Marist shows Spitzer leading by two, and PPP has Spitzer ahead by four. But it's possible that these numbers fail to give an accurate snapshot of the contest. What if the same social-desirability bias that leads voters to lie about voting for the black guy also motivates them to lie about voting for the creep who resigned from office in disgrace after having sex with hookers?

Polls opened at 6 a.m. and almost immediately faced problems. In Midtown, one machine serving District 12 broke, prompting workers to switch to paper ballots. In Park Slope, another was down for 30 minutes until a mechanic returned it to service.

\"This machine was out of order,\" said Syedur Dastagir, coordinator of the Park Slope Armory polling place. \"[But] voting continued.\"

Voting machines were delivered late to the Central Synagogue polling place near Lexington Avenue and East 55th Street, a Board of Elections official said. They were up and running by 7:15 a.m., she added.

From HuffPost's Michael McLaughlin:

Anthony Weiner began his day with an interview on Hot 97 before showing up at a Harlem subway stop to greet voters.

For more than an hour, he took photos and asked voters to support him outside the 125th St. and Lenox Ave.

\"Today is primary day unless you're not voting for me,\" the ex-congressman joked.

Voters gladly stepped up to shake his hand and talk about policy, but they weren't necessarily won over to vote for him.

\"I wanted to meet him, but he probably won't get my vote,\" said Louis Lane, an IT specialist from the Bronx. \"Interesting character. He's been through a lot.\"

Another voter who had problems with Weiner's sexring scandal however still said he'd vote for him.

\"Are you going to be in office texting people,\" said Virhil Leocadio, 48, of the Bronx.

\"I've got embarrassing things in my past that you know about,\" Weiner

acknowledged.

Most people however asked him about policies on affordable housing or schools.

\"This is the classic aspirational neighborhood, \" Weiner said about Harlem.

From Salon:

Obviously de Blasio is not actually the perfect progressive candidate. His message is polling- and consultant-driven. But he was smart enough to actually look at the right polls and listen to the right consultants, and he was politically bold enough to relentlessly push a message that has frankly terrified all the right people. It makes logical sense — get elected in a primary dominated by liberal voters by sounding like a liberal — but New York Democrats are so squeamish and so captured by ultra-wealthy interests that no one else was willing to do this. Besides doomed Liu obviously. So in this race, de Blasio is sort of our Howard Dean — a good Democrat with a fairly middle-of-the-road history running a savvy campaign as the real progressive in the race — with John Liu as the sidelined Dennis Kucinich, the guy who’s always been this progressive but who never seemed electable. (Before you feel too bad for Liu, remember that he has repeatedly, for years, falsely claimed to have worked in a “sweatshop,” which is just egregious bullshit. Don’t pretend you worked in a sweatshop, people.)

After 10 months, 150 forums and $15 million in advertising, the Democratic primary for mayor is ending Tuesday in a cliffhanger — but not in a way that anybody had expected.

Public Advocate Bill de Blasio, an also-ran just weeks ago, is close to winning the nomination outright Tuesday night, while Bill Thompson and Christine Quinn are battling for enough votes to force a runoff.

The race is the marquee matchup in a day of primary battles to determine nominees for citywide and boroughwide offices, and for City Council seats. The polls will be open from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Capital New York's Azi Paybarah reports:

It's primary day in New York City.

The polls are open until 9 p.m., after which the clock will start to tick on another test, of whether the New York City Board of Elections can determine quickly and precisely who won, and whether run-offs will be needed, particularly in the Democratic mayoral contest.

Polls indicate that Bill de Blasio has a chance of exceeding the 40 percent support he'd need to win outright, and that either of his chief rivals, Christine Quinn and Bill Thompson, will do well just to force their way into a run-off with him.

This is where Anthony Weiner and John Liu, whose campaigns have in many fallen short of expectations, matter.
