Aveion Cason is a former NFL running back who spent nine seasons playing in the pros. He shared on a previous episode of "Oprah's Lifeclass" that he grew up without his father in his life. Yet when Cason had a son of his own, he continued the cycle and was absent from his child's life.
Cason and his son, Aveion Jr. reconnected for the first time in nine years on "Oprah's Lifeclass," and Aveion Jr. was able to tell his father how he felt. "It felt horrible that you left me," he told Cason. "It made me feel like I was a mistake... I loved the person, but I never see him."
But what happened after the show ended? On a new episode of "Oprah's Lifeclass" with Bishop T.D. Jakes, the family -- Cason, Aveion Jr. and the boy's mother, Brandy -- give an update on their lives.
In the above clip, Cason says he felt a part of him was missing after the show. "I built up the courage to ask Brandy, 'Can he come live with me?'" Cason says. "And she said yes, and now he's here today."
The audience applauds the father and son in the video as Cason gives Aveion, Jr. a hug.
Brandy, who joins the conversation from Chicago via Skype, talks about how she felt letting her son go. "It was so hard," Brandy says. "It was one of the hardest things I've ever had to do in my life, I'm getting emotional now. I miss him so much, but I realized it was something he had to do because he wanted a relationship with his father."
"Let's give Brandy a round of applause," Oprah says, as she and the 15,000-member audience stand up and applaud. "I think that's actually ultimate love," she says.
Bishop Jakes also applauds Brandy, and says that many other women keep their children away from their fathers as a "switch" to punish the father.
"Every man who fathers a child is not like Aveion Sr.," Bishop Jakes says. "He cannot always be trusted, if he's a substance abuser or if he may abuse the child in some way -- then you are wise to add that layer of caution. Every man isn't like that. But what I am saying, is don't allow your personal bitterness to make you an unjust judge of whether it's safe for your child."
