Simon Cowell has been judging singing competitions for as long as some of the latest batch of contestants have been alive. And yet, we've never heard him sing a single note, despite attempts by his fellow judges over the years. Maybe it just took th right person pushing him to sing. And that person was Kelly Rowland on "The X Factor."
One of the two newest judges thrust a microphone in his face and demanded that he sing. It all started when Demi Lovato said that a contestant sang just like she'd always imagined Simon would sound. Simon's critique was that the guy sounded like he was drowning.
And so the stage was set, the mic was placed and Simon sang. And it was ... not good. Simon himself could think of so many colorful ways to describe how awful it was. The Hollywood Reporter's Michele Amabile Angermiller joked that Simon may be the best talent in the Over 25s category.
Granted, he was supposedly imitating the guy who started this whole thing. He even jumped on Twitter to try and make it really, really clear that he was imitating that guy. It. Was. A. Joke. But come on, Simon. We know you can't sing. It's okay.
Perhaps his joke can reverse the fortunes of his show. "The X Factor" needs a huge boost in the ratings. Wednesday night's season premiere was only watched by 6.17 million viewers, a steep drop from last season's 8.97 million. That itself was a hefty 20% drop from the season 1 premiere, so things are definitely going in the wrong direction.
Season 3 of "The X Factor" continues on Wednesdays and Thursdays at 8 p.m. ET on Fox.
