Aaron Alexis Carved 'Better Off This Way' Into Shotgun

Before Aaron Alexis went on his Navy Yard shooting rampage, he reportedly carved the words "Better Off This Way," into his shotgun.

Alexis, who died during Monday's shooting spree, also carved the phrase, "My E-L-F Weapon" onto the stock of the gun, according to ABC News.

Now, investigators are questioning the meaning of the phrases and if "better off this way" might be a clue that Alexis knew he would die in the altercation.

There is also speculation that "ELF," which stands for "extremely low frequency" in many circles, might be a reference to what he told Rhode Island police in August, that he was hearing voices of three people who had been sent to follow him and keep him awake.

He told the cops the people behind the strange voices were using “some sort of microwave machine” to send vibrations into his body, preventing him from falling asleep.

Investigators told the Washington Post that they are not sure whether Alexis was referring to that incident or Naval programs that use low frequencies, such as the High Frequency Active Auroral Research Program (HAARP), a joint effort with the Air Force often cited by conspiracy theorists.

Officials aren't sticking to that theory exclusively. The New York Daily News pointed out that "ELF" is also slang for "Every Ladies' Fantasy."
