A thoughtful letter written by the President of the United States to a worried little girl has been making the rounds online this week after it resurfaced on the website Letters of Note.

In 1961, 8-year-old Michelle Rochon wrote a letter to then-President John F. Kennedy expressing her concern for Santa Claus after she overheard her parents talking about the possibility of Soviet nuclear tests at the North Pole.

"Please stop the Russians from bombing the North Pole because they will kill Santa Claus," Rochon wrote. "I am 8 years old. I am in the third grade at Holy Cross School."

Wanting to allay her anxieties, Kennedy responded with these comforting words:

Dear Michelle,

I was glad to get your letter about trying to stop the Russians from bombing the North Pole and risking the life of Santa Claus.

I share your concern about the atmospheric testing of the Soviet Union, not only for the North Pole but for countries throughout the world; not only for Santa Claus but for people throughout the world.

However, you must not worry about Santa Claus. I talked with him yesterday and he is fine. He will be making his rounds again this Christmas.

Sincerely,

(Signed, 'John Kennedy')

This adorable exchange between Kennedy and Rochon has squeezed the public's collective heart before.

In 2007, their letters generated quite a bit of buzz when Rochon and the late president's daughter, Caroline Kennedy, met on the set of "Good Morning America." Kennedy said at the time that Christmas had been "huge" for her father, who could empathize with the little girl's fears. (Watch a clip of the 2007 "GMA" segment below.)

Now in her late 50s, Michelle Rochon goes by the name Michelle Rochon Phillips.

"President Kennedy was a hero to everybody back then," she told the Pensacola News-Journal in 2008 as she recounted her motives for penning that special note. "Everybody just loved him."
