Detroit Factory Fire Rages At Abandoned Building On West Side (PHOTOS)

PHOTOS: Massive Fire Rages In Abandoned Factory

Detroit firefighters worked to contain a massive fire at an abandoned factory on the city's west side Thursday, WDIV-TV reports. The fire has been declared a HAZMAT situation.

The building is near Livernois and I-94, according to WWJ. A WWJ reporter on the scene said the northern end of the building was crumbling, with bricks falling down.

News outlets and bystanders captured the fire in photos posted to Twitter, and users tweeted images of smoke filling the sky around the city, as well as from miles away. One person tweeted that he could see smoke from Schoolcraft College, about 15 miles away.

Firefighters were on the scene to battle the blaze. According to the Detroit Free Press, Detroit firefighters were joined by their peers from Highland Park, and DTE Energy crews were also present to attempt to stop the fire from spreading on utility polls and to cut power.

The images close to the action show huge flames.

And from above, the fire looks just as terrifying.

“Right now, we’re trying to get it out,” said Detroit senior fire chief Jack Wiley. The fire has been contained to the building, he said.

No injuries have been reported.

CORRECTION: An earlier version of this article mistakenly said, in one instance, that Detroit police battled the fire rather than firefighters.
