'Modern Family' Premiere: Everyone's Thinking About Proposals

It was a question that had been looming all summer over "Modern Family." Now that gay marriage has been made legal in California, thanks to the Supreme Court ruling on the Defense of Marriage Act, would Mitch and Cam get engaged? Apparently, everyone was reading the minds of the show's creators, as that very issue dominated the season premiere.

In typical "ModFam" fashion, both Cam and Mitch were secretly planning elaborate proposals for one another. They were each also competing to be the first to propose, thus sabotaging the other's attempts to propose. In the end, though, their proposal story wound up being something that was completely unplanned.

On their way home -- where both proposal scenarios would have played out simultaneously -- the guys got a flat tire. They reminisced about their first apartment, enjoyed the stars, and then each got down on one knee to finish fixing it. The two looked at each other and there was nothing else that needed be said. And so they both simply said, "Yes."

Zap2It's Billy Nilles called it a "true romantic moment" and said he couldn't wait to see the wedding. TV Fanatic's Leigh Raines was happy for the couple as well, writing, "Congratulations! It just goes to show that it's not always about mood lighting or recreating a romantic memory, sometimes it's just being in the right place at the right time with the person you love.”

Season 5 of "Modern Family" continues on Wednesdays at 9 p.m. ET on ABC.
