Blogger Talks Food Insecurity And Poverty Shaming: I Was Chased Out Of A Grocery Store For Using Food Stamps (VIDEO)

Nearly 49 million Americans, including 15.9 million children, struggle with hunger on a daily basis. In a conversation about food insecurity and poverty shaming, blogger Rachael Barker shared her story of being confronted in a grocery store while trying to use food stamps.

"All I know is that it was a hatchet-faced man who was buying a lot of beer," Barker said, describing the customer who harassed her to host Nancy Redd. "He was glaring at me the whole time I was paying for my food, and he muttered something under his breath about food stamps, and then he chased me out of the grocery store in a very threatening way. I was very lucky to have my mother waiting for me outside."

Barker, who wrote a blog post about her experience with poverty shaming, added, "one thing that my blog pointed out was that poverty shaming is not only distressing, it's also counter-productive."

Joining Redd and Barker in the conversation were Lorraine Berry, a freelance writer, and Robert Walker, a professor of Social Policy at the University of Oxford.
