Syria Aid Access Desperately Needed, UN Security Council Says

AP

UNITED NATIONS (AP) -- The U.N. Security Council is expressing alarm at the rapidly deteriorating humanitarian situation in Syria and demanding immediate access for desperately needed aid.

A presidential statement adopted Wednesday urges the Syrian government to facilitate "safe and unhindered humanitarian access to people in need through the most effective ways, including across conflict lines and, where appropriate, across borders from neighboring countries."

Security Council members said they wanted to quickly follow up on last week's resolution to eliminate Syria's chemical weapons. It was the first legally binding action by the U.N.'s most powerful body, which had been deeply divided over the 2 1/2 year conflict in Syria that has killed over 100,000 people.

The presidential statement is legally binding but a step below a resolution.
