By the end of September, 704 rhinos had been killed by poachers in South Africa. This startling figure showcases the growing scourge of rhino slaughter, which surpassed last year's record murder rate of 668 with three full months left in the year. Assuming the trend continues, experts say more than 1,000 rhinos could be killed by the end of December, and the entire population could be gone within a decade.
