Matt Smith Joins 'American Psycho' Musical As Patrick Bateman

Matt Smith will jump from the set of Britain's favorite science fiction series to the stage of what just might be the most horrifying musical ever produced.

The "Doctor Who" star is set to appear in the musical adaptation of "American Psycho," the Bret Easton Ellis nightmare of a novel that chronicles the life of investment banker turned serial killer, Patrick Bateman. Smith will be taking on the role of Mr. Bateman in London this December, leaving his Time Lord adventures for a taste of homicidal theatrics.

According to The Independent, Smith has already begun rehearsals for the production, opening at the Almeida Theatre in Islington. His casting had been kept a secret until his arrival on set this week, surprising the rest of the actors including Ben Aldridge, Charlie Anson, Jonathan Bailey and Katie Brayben.

The unconventional musical has already garnered attention for its Kickstarter campaign, which managed to raise over $154,000 last May. Tony-award winning composer Duncan Sheik has been attached to the project since the early stages, joining director Rupert Goold and scriptwriter Roberto Aguirre-Sacas.

Original author Easton's verdict so far: "I don't want to say [it's a] chamber pop musical, but definitely something more typical of a Broadway show."

With a few months left until the production's December 12 opening, there's plenty of time for us to speculate on how Smith's performance will stack up to Christian Bale's terrifying depiction of Bateman back in 2000. Rumors are that the musical is eventually headed to New York City to claim its rightful place on Broadway, so stay tuned for more updates.
