A father in the United Arab Emirates who killed his son over the boy's bad grades has reportedly been sentenced to three years in prison.

According to Gulf News, the Abu Dhabi man, identified only as R.M., was found guilty this week of whipping his 12-year-old son to death with a computer cable. The man claims he had been disciplining his son because the boy had tried to keep his grades a secret.

“He not only failed his exams, he also hid his certificate and lied to me. That is why I had to discipline him because he was not raised this way,” the man told the court earlier this year, according to The National.

Lt. Colonel Jumma al Kaabi, an investigator involved in the case, told Emirates 24/7 that the father "did not leave any part of his son’s body unbeaten until the boy fainted and died."

"This is really an ugly and savage case by all standards. This father appeared without any human feelings when he attacked his son’s body in such a savage manner," Colonel Rashid Burasheed, chief of Abu Dhabi's Criminal Investigation Department, told the news outlet.

R.M., described by media as an unemployed former drug addict, was found guilty Wednesday of premeditated murder and sentenced to three years in prison.

In this case, the victim's family reportedly chose not to seek the death penalty.
