There is no denying that Robert Rodriguez adds a special touch to all of his movies. And this week, he opened up about the specific films that inspired his unique directing style.

Talking with The Daily Beast, the Machete Kills auteur listed eight classic cult movies that continue to resonate with him. He also included clip snippets in the article, which highlight each film’s standout scene.

Flicks like Flash Gordon, An American Werewolf In London and The Hitcher all made the list. But if you’re curious about the film that inspired Machete, look no further than Mad Max.

“Mad Max was an influence on Machete and Machete Kills,” he told the site. “The character has become larger than life, and you want the adventure to reflect that.”
