Dan Boyle Hospitalized After Maxim Lapierre Hit From Behind During Sharks-Blues Game (VIDEO)

San Jose Sharks defenseman Dan Boyle was stretchered off the ice and taken to a local hospital following an illegal hit by Blues forward Maxim Lapierre on Tuesday night.

Lapierre's hit occurred early in the first period when Boyle attempted to retrieve a puck from the corner in San Jose's own end. The Blues center drove Boyle's head into the glass while the defenseman's back was turned. Boyle also appeared to hit his jaw on the edge of the boards before falling to the ice.

Lapierre was ejected from the game.

On Wednesday, ESPN's Pierre LeBrun spoke with Boyle via text message.

Sharks forward Logan Couture called Lapierre's hit "gutless" after their 6-2 win.

“After the first shift, he’s yelling at us from their bench that he’s coming after us, and then he does that. I don’t even know. It’s pretty gutless," Couture told CSN Bay Area. "[Boyle] was shaking, his eyes were up at the roof. We tried talking to him and he wasn’t responding. I’ve never seen anything like it."

Lapierre was offered an in-person hearing with the NHL Department of Player Safety on Wednesday, per NHL.com. As a member of the Montreal Canadiens in 2010, LaPierre was suspended for four games for a late hit.
