Todd Helton: Jim Irsay 'Should Shut His Mouth' (VIDEO)

Retired MLB star Todd Helton has Peyton Manning's back. The former Rockies first baseman defended the Broncos quarterback and ripped Colts owner Jim Irsay for criticizing his former employee days before he returns to Indianapolis for the first time on Sunday.

"I have a real problem with that. I think he should shut his mouth personally. It’s getting me a little riled up," Helton said. "I think the guy just wants to be famous so he gets his one little shot for somebody to know who his name is. To me, that’s just classless and it really, really bothers me. I've probably said enough already. I hope Peyton goes back and steps on their throat.”

Manning and Helton have been longtime friends dating back to when they were teammates in 1994 on the University of Tennessee football team.

In an interview with USA Today Sports, Irsay took a shot at Manning and his tenure in Indianapolis for only winning one Super Bowl.

Denver head coach John Fox fired back at Irsay during an appearance on SiriusXM NFL Radio.

“I saw the comments [from Irsay] and to be honest with you I thought it was a bit of a cheap shot,” Fox said, via ProFootballTalk. "To me, in my opinion, they were disappointing and inappropriate. I mean, Peyton would never say anything. He’s too classy to do that. But they sounded a little ungrateful and unappreciative to me for a guy that has set a standard, won a Super Bowl, won division titles, won four MVP awards. I'd be thankful with that one Super Bowl ring because there's a lot of people that don’t have one."

Irsay later tried to clarify his comments on Twitter.
