Arsenio Hall says he's an "infotainment guy." His late-night stand-up routine, which pokes fun at the day's headlines, is a big part of "The Arsenio Hall Show" –- both now and when his show originally came on the air in 1989.
More than 20 years ago, Hall and Oprah had a reported feud over one of Hall's jokes. During his appearance on "Oprah's Next Chapter," the two clear up exactly what happened.
Hall says he once made a joke about the 1988 episode of "The Oprah Winfrey Show" when Oprah wheeled a wagon filled with 67 pounds of animal fat onstage to show how much weight she had lost.
In the joke, Hall says, "There are probably people in Utah saying, 'Who is he?' Remember all that weight Oprah lost? Old Oprah meat, that's me."
"It's kind of a silly joke," he says now.
But that harmless joke wasn't what caused Oprah to cancel one of her appearances on "The Arsenio Hall Show."
"You were mad at me because I did a Stedman joke," Hall recalls, referring to Stedman Graham, Oprah's longtime partner.
"I would have gotten mad over that," Oprah says. "And I still do because Stedman didn't ask to be in it."
The joke was based on something Hall read about Graham in a tabloid article -- which turned out to be completely false.
"Didn't I call you up?" Oprah asks.
"Yes. Best and worst day of my life," Hall says.
Oprah says she remembers calling Maya Angelou before calling Hall to make sure what she was doing was "kosher."
"You schooled me in a very classy way," Hall says. "I knew you were serious, but you didn't scream."
The conversation ended with Oprah canceling her appearance on Hall's show but promising to join him someday -- "just not now."
She kept her word. In the clip, Oprah recalls being nervous the night she finally went on "The Arsenio Hall Show" in 1992.
"You said, 'I got you,'" Oprah says to Hall. "'Don't worry about a thing. I'm going to take care of you.' And you walked me over to the seat."
Hall says he was returning the favor. "You took care of me in Chicago," he says. "You put me on your show and you took care of me."
