Authorities in Europe are holding a young girl who law enforcement officials say could be a child missing from the U.S. or another country.
The discovery has prompted some media outlets to report the possibility that the child could be Lisa Irwin of Missouri, a girl alleged to have been abducted in 2011.
The Kansas City Division of the FBI confirmed to The Huffington Post on Tuesday that the Kansas City toddler is being looked at as a possibility, but they are apparently skeptical that the child could be Irwin, given her reported age.
"Lisa Irwin would be turning 3 in November. The child that they are reporting in Greece is in the age range between 4 and 6," Bridget Patton, a spokeswoman for the FBI's Kansas City office told HuffPost.
The blond-haired, blue-eyed girl found in Greece, identified only as Maria, was found on Oct. 16, during a drug sweep in a Roma settlement near the town of Farsala. The girl was living with a couple who claimed to be her parents, but bore no resemblance, police said. Investigators' suspicions were later confirmed when a DNA test showed the child was not the couple's biological daughter.
Authorities are now trying to determine who the girl is and where she came from.
Patton said the FBI received several calls from concerned citizens who remember the Irwin case and saw television reports about the child found in Greece. Patton described the investigation the FBI is now conducting into the child’s identity as routine.
"Whenever we get any tips ... the FBI is going to follow up on those tips and we're going to vet that information," Patton said.
Irwin's case garnered national media attention in the weeks and months following her disappearance.
Deborah Bradley and Lisa's father, Jeremy Irwin, reported their daughter missing on Oct. 4, 2011. Bradley and Irwin said the girl, then 10 months old, was discovered missing when the father returned home from working a night shift. They suggested she was kidnapped from an unlocked window as the mother and two other boys slept.
Despite clearing thousands of tips and leads in Irwin's disappearance, investigators have yet to determine what happened to the child.
