You know you're rich when you start buying neighboring homes to protect your view.

At least, that's the thinking behind billionaire techie Elon Musk's latest real estate purchase: a 2,800 square-foot home located directly across the street from his palatial mansion in Bel Air, one of the ritziest neighborhoods in Los Angeles, Calif.

Real estate blog Trulia.com, which first reported on Musk's $6.75 million purchase, guesses that Musk will "either capitalize on the opportunity presented by the new home and build an even more over-the-top mansion, or he’ll raze the existing home and create even better views and privacy for his current home."

Whatever his reasoning, Musk has definitely snapped up a gem of a property. The ranch home overlooks the 13th green and 14th fairway of the Bel-Air Country Club Golf Course, according to the official listing. It has three bedrooms, 4.5 bathrooms, an oval pool and a private guest cottage.

The home once belonged to longtime actor Gene Wilder, who sold the home in 2007 for $2.75 million. Wilder is best known for his roles as Willy Wonka in "Willy Wonka & The Chocolate Factory" and Dr. Frankenstein in "Young Frankenstein."

Musk's current home on the same street has seven bedrooms and 13 bathrooms across 20,000 square feet of living space, according to public records. He purchased it Dec. 2012 for about $17 million. It's all very fitting, of course, for Musk -- the CEO of space tech company SpaceX, co-founder of PayPal and real-life inspiration behind billionaire tech playboy Tony Stark of "Iron Man."
