Bill de Blasio was elected mayor of New York City Tuesday night. The Democratic candidate defeated Republican Joe Lhota. De Blasio, currently New York City's public advocate, is the first Democratic mayor-elect in New York City in 20 years.

He is set to take office in January, succeeding Mayor Michael Bloomberg, who's served for the past 12 years.
