On the heels of President Barack Obama's Wednesday DSCC fundraiser in Dallas, Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) gave two cents on what the trip meant for his state.
In a statement released Wednesday on his website, Cruz hit at comments drawing controversy for Obama on Obamacare. The senator said that the president should "take his broken promises tour elsewhere."
"President Obama's trip to Texas brings nothing with it but broken promises," Cruz said in a statement. "He promised that Americans could keep their health care plans. We were told premiums would go down, that jobs would be created. And we now know these are all false promises."
During the DSCC fundraiser, Obama appeared to take a shot at Cruz for the government shutdown, without mentioning him directly by name. According to a transcript released by the White House, the president referenced "at least one senator from Texas," saying that person's "necessity for the shutdown" was the Affordable Care Act.
And, frankly, I think there were a whole bunch of Republican senators, at least, and a number of House members who knew it was a bad idea, but because of the dynamic in their party right now, they felt obliged to go along with that kind of strategy. Well, we've got to liberate those reality-based Republicans from some of the extreme impulses in that party. And part of the way is doing that is sending a clear message: This is not how we govern. This is not what America is about. We can have disagreements on budget. We can have disagreements on policy. But what we don’t do is hurt the American people or the American economy just for an ideological point.
But if they don't see a cost for those kinds of strategies, then they’ll keep doing it. And the only way to extract a cost when it comes to politicians is during election time.
Before making it to the Lone Star State, Obama's trip faced an unexpected security-related delay in Washington. According to the Hill, travel plans were delayed for nearly an hour after a law enforcement dog reacted to a car at the White House.
“K9 alerted to a vehicle parked in the Ellipse parking area,” the Secret Service said in a statement obtained by the Hill. “The vehicle was searched utilizing MPD EOD.”
