Here's A Sneak Peek At Those Mysterious Google Barges

Posted: Updated:

Google has gotten to the point where it's spending money to build things that, in its own words, it's not entirely sure what it will do with.

On Thursday, we got our first glimpse at what Google's mystery barges, four of which popped up in different ports around the country in recent weeks, will look like once complete. According to documents obtained by the San Francisco Chronicle, the one anchored in San Francisco Bay will sport sleek sails "reminiscent of fish fins."

Google's mystery barges have been making waves (sorry) for the past few weeks after the first one was discovered in the San Francisco Bay. For a while, nobody knew anything about the barges except that they were owned by Google.

On Wednesday, Google offered a statement on the barges in which the company admitted it's still making some decisions on just what they'll be used for:

"A floating data center? A wild party boat? A barge housing the last remaining dinosaur? Sadly, none of the above. Although it’s still early days and things may change, we’re exploring using the barge as an interactive space where people can learn about new technology."

Anyone else suspicious of Google's dinosaur reference? Does Google know something we don't? At this point I don't think I would be surprised.

It's unclear how much the new project will cost, but Google has made almost $3 billion in the past 3 months -- so whatever it costs to build an "artistic" barge is probably a drop in the bucket.

Whatever this boat is, it'll be crowded. According to the Chronicle, the documents say the barge will likely attract more than 1,000 people a day. Probably not as crowded as it would be if it were a party boat, though. Just sayin'.
