Verne Lundquist Mocks ESPN Over Katherine Webb Coverage During Alabama-LSU Broadcast (VIDEO)

CBS Announcer Takes Shot At ESPN Over QB's Girlfriend

CBS' Verne Lundquist showed discretion when it came to discussing the girlfriend of Alabama quarterback A.J. McCarron but he wasn't quite as circumspect in his remarks about ESPN. Late in the CBS broadcast of the Alabama-LSU game on Saturday night, Lundquist took a slightly veiled shot at ESPN after introducing McCarron's girlfriend and mother to viewers.

"Among those who have remained despite the rain: clapping her hands is A.J. McCarron's mom, Dee Dee Bonner, and just to the left, his girlfriend, Katherine Webb," the veteran sportscaster said. "And they watch now as AJ McCarron may or may not make another appearance on the field.”

After a brief pause, Lundquist's broadcast partner Gary Danielson chimed in.

“That’s it?," Danielson asked. "That’s all you’re gonna say?”

Unable to resist needling the competition, Lundquist snuck in an apparent jab at ESPN and Brent Musburger.

“You’re darn right," he responded. "I don’t work for that four-letter network ... Discretion.”

As Lundquist and Danielson clearly recall, Webb was catapulted to fame when she was repeatedly mentioned -- and ogled -- by Musberger during Alabama's win in the BCS Championship Game in January.

"Wow, you quarterbacks get all the good looking women. What a beautiful woman, whoa!" Musburger gushed as ESPN cameras showed Webb in the stands after Alabama jumped out to an early 14-0 lead over Notre Dame. "If you're a youngster in Alabama, start getting the football out and throw it around the backyard with pops."

FLASHBACK: Katherine Webb Makes Brent Musburger Go 'Wow!'

In a statement released the day after that game, ESPN acknowledged that Musburger went too far in his ogling of Webb:

“We always try to capture interesting storylines and the relationship between an Auburn grad who is Miss Alabama and the current Alabama quarterback certainly met that test. However, we apologize that the commentary in this instance went too far and Brent understands that.”
