Recently reelected New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie (R) has canceled his appearance at Thursday's Committee of Seventy's annual fundraising breakfast because of illness.
The governor's office notified the good-government advocacy group of Christie's cancelation at 6 p.m. Wednesday, the night before the event, saying the governor was "just not feeling well at all," according to Zack Stalberg, Committee of Seventy president and CEO. HuffPost was tipped off to the cancelation by local blogger and reporter Laura Goldman.
About 600 guests were expected to attend the event, the organization's only annual fundraiser. Stalberg told The Huffington Post the group is "scrambling" to notify expected attendees that the breakfast is canceled and will be rescheduled when Christie can make it.
Christie, who spoke at the group's breakfast in 2010, committed to attend this year's event a few weeks ago, Stalberg said. The "signal" from the governor's office was that the appearance will be rescheduled, he said.
"My hunch is it'll be a while," said Stalberg.
According to a Committee of Seventy press release, the food that was to be served at the event will be donated to those in need.
“Obviously we are very sorry for any inconvenience that results from this cancelation and we hope Governor Christie is better soon,” Stalberg said in the release.
