Lily Allen made waves last week with the release of her boundary-pushing new single, "Hard Out Here." The British singer debuted the song with a tongue-in-cheek new video, poking fun at Miley Cyrus and Robin Thicke in the visuals.
The song features Allen commenting on the expectations of women in the music industry: "It's hard out here for a bitch." The 28-year-old singer recently spoke to The Guardian about her definition of the word "bitch" and the other "bitches" in the music industry.
"Dolly Parton is a bitch," Allen told the publication. "Adele's a bitch. Angela Merkel is a bitch ... Rihanna's an inspiring bitch, my mum, Miley's a bitch, rising. She's my hero. Kate Middleton is not a bitch."
She also criticized the lack of meaning in current pop hits and singers who don't write their own music, saying, "Nobody says anything real today. Most of those girls have their songs written by other people. It annoys me, because 'eh oh eh oh ahh' is not a chorus – that's not a point where I feel 'we're connecting', you know? I need a narrative."
