MADISON, Wis. (AP) — A Madison man accused of locking his teenage daughter in the basement and starving her down to 68 pounds has taken the stand in his second trial.

A jury convicted the 42-year-old man of felony child neglect in March, acquitted him of a misdemeanor neglect charge and deadlocked on four other counts, including false imprisonment and child abuse. Prosecutors decided to retry him on those charges. The new trial began Nov. 12.

The man didn't testify in his first trial. But he took the stand Wednesday, starting his testimony by outlining his days in high school and in the U.S. Army. He says he has suffered from what he called learning and comprehension challenges all his life.

The Associated Press is not naming the man to avoid identifying the girl.
