While the mysterious Melinda May didn't get a full back-story, like most of the other characters on "Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." have, her nickname got some explanation. Skye wasn't too impressed with May's brusque demeanor, and took to using the nickname, "The Cavalry," to put May down. Coulson called her out on it and told her to stop. He also told her more about why she got the nickname in the first place.
"A civilian girl and a couple of our guys were being held by the followers of this gifted individual. Or worshipers, we never found out," Coulson told Skye. "[May] took it upon herself to get them out. Said she could fix the problem. So, she went in. Crossed off the enemy force.”
Coulson seemed to not know how May "crossed off the enemy force," but he did say that she came out a totally different person. In fact, before that incident, May was much more light-hearted and prank prone. She was actually quite a bit like Skye. Coulson brought May onto the team to see if any of the old May was still in there.
Bustle's Caroline Pate still had plenty of questions about May. "Tonight’s show supposedly answered these questions, but it did so in its special 'Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.' way, which is essentially answering a question with another question," she wrote. Over at IGN, Eric Goldman said that this storytelling technique has become a crutch for the show, writing, "If May herself had spoken about what she’d gone through, rather than others, in scenes she wasn’t even in, we could have gotten to truly know her better.” Zap2It's Terri Schwartz thinks we'll have to wait until February sweeps for any real answers.
