It's a bold new era on "The Mentalist," and a bold new time. In it's first post-Red John episode, the action jumped ahead two years. Patrick Jane was laying low on a tropical island, hiding from the authorities, until Abbott showed up with an offer. He had terms for Jane to work with the FBI in exchange for dropping the charges against him.
Zap2It's Rick Porter noted, "By jumping ahead two years and removing Jane to an island, where he has cut off most of his ties with his former life, it allows for as clean a break with the Red John story as is possible," he noted. "It's not a big leap to predict Jane will eventually come to help the FBI, either on his terms or theirs or somewhere in between.”
Jane wrote up some terms of his own, which Abbott signed off on while they were on the island. Once stateside, though, Abbott said he never agreed to the terms. "I don’t think you’re hearing me, Jane. You are on US soil now. I am the Federal Government, and I am telling you, that is a napkin," Abbott said of Jane's terms. "This is the deal. Take it or leave it.” Abbott's deal was five years of probation, working under Abbott.
And so, Jane rejected the offer, and surrendered. That said, he promised Lisbon he had everything under control. We'll have to wait and see what his plan is, though. The Hollywood Reporter's Philiana Ng was left with plenty of questions, asking, "Should Jane have taken Abbott's deal? How long will he be stuck in detention? Will Jane and Lisbon find their place within the FBI? ... Do you like this new world of 'The Mentalist'?”
The all-new, all-different "The Mentalist" continues on Sundays at 10 p.m. EST on CBS.
